A field is a specified area in a record used for a particular category of data. It all fits together like this: A record in a disk file might be thought of as a card in a manual inventory system. The fields are pieces of information, such as name, item number, and any other data required, that are printed on the card. The biggest difference in the data on the disk file is that it will show the data as of the last transaction.
